I've bred african cichlids before but i just had my first pair of convicts concieve :) it's crazy, i didn't realize they would mate so small! their just over an inch! my kenyi's didn't mate till 2 or 2.5 (i forget, too long ago) this is exciting! i removed the fry from the tank (because there are other fish that woulda eaten them) is there anything else i should do? besides feed the fish and normal stuff... :-D:-D i know there's a couple smart ***E$ out there that woulda said somethin like that

also is it likely they'll stop being so aggressive now? outta no where they got overly aggressive and have all the other fish in corners... but now the fry are out, they should all be fine now, right?

lol ur convicts are breeding no **** theyr gonna be aggressive to everyone else in the tank. you should separate them next time.
and just feed the fry tiny food they can eat, and keep the water very clean.

they're going to breed again soon and the aggression will rise :nilly:

they said it all convicts are very aggresive while breeding If I was you just get a 20g to put them in while they lay but after that pull them once they fry start to venture off.

oohhh convicts will not breed again until the fry are gone from the tank so make sure once the fry start to venture off take the parents out of the smaller tank or they will eat them.

Oh, ok thank you everyone for the responses. i just want to know, will they calm down while they're not breeding? or am i to expect this behavior from this point forth?

Baby brine shrimp is the ultimate fry food........Newly hatched shrimp carry the yolk sack that is full of protein......Fry grow really quickly.......The fry will reach 1 inch within 5-7 weeks........

ok, well they killed off my firemouth that was in the same tank (and were attacking the slightly smaller jaguar) so i moved them to their own tank... the rapheal cat fish and the jag then made short work of any fry that i couldn't remove... now that the pair is in their own tank, the male keeps chasing the female... not biting or anything. just chasing her every once in a while... i just wanted to make sure that this wouldn't lead to her stressing and dying... how long will it be till she is ready to breed (so he'll stop harrassing her)

That's really cool. It's always exciting when your fish breed. Convicts were the first fish I ever got to breed. Then I moved to african cichlids, pike cichlids, and now I'm going to have a go at marine fish breeding. As for your later questions.... You can pretty much expect convicts to be super aggressive from now on now that they have paired up and are breeding. Separating them into their own tank is your best bet. Keep up the good work!
