ONKYO makes decent recievers, they offer clean power and the usual features. The only thing that ever bothered me about ONKYO is that the sound is clean but it is also "lean". They seem to emphasise on the highs and mids but leave a little to be desired in the lower frequencies IMO.
If it were my money and I was on a tight budget I would start with a nice reciever and a pair of good bookshelf speakers and "build" a system from there. The speakers that come in the "all in one" boxes are for the most part not very good and you can do much better.
For recievers I would look into H/K, Pioneer, Marantz and ONKYO. Personally I like what Pioneer offers in thier "budget" models. The MCaCC auto set-up is a great feature and they seem to have great sound and reliable power supplies.
For speakers I would look into APERION AUDIO, PSB, Paradigm, and Boston. These companies offer great bookshelf speakers at a great price. You can later add a matching center, then matching surrounds and eventually the REAL sub of your choice!
It took me almost four years to put together my system, and I am very glad I went that route instead of buying the "best" Home Theater IN a BOX" that I could afford. What I was able to "build" will surely blow any of those out of the door for movies AND music!
Trust me, its worth the wait!!
