So, I have had numerous aquariums over the years, first a 10 gal, then a 5 and a 2.5, and a 10 again. Now I have a 20 (I think...) and I've put in a dwarf neon gourami (Livious), a gold gourami (Midas), a bala shark (Yin), a "dragon fish" or violet goby (Mokosh), ans some ghost shrimp for the goby to much on. I'm going to get some blood worms for her too.

I didn't plan on getting the goby, it was a spur of the moment buy after I had gone to the pet shop to get african dwarf frogs. I read that the frogs don't do as well with fish in the tank, but now I'm finding out that the goby prefers a brackish tank. Is she going to live a poor, short life?

Oh, I forgot to mention...

I know that Yin the bala shark and Mokosh the goby are going to outgrow this tank. Right now Yin is only about 3 inches and Mokosh is only 4 inches. I figure that I should have some time before they'll need more room.

do you mean 200gal? because a 20 isnt really a large tank...

with the size of your tank and the fact it is fresh I would recommend tanking the goby back to the store while it is still healthy.

Welcome. Yes the goby will prefer brackish as it gets bigger but fresh is ok when small. At that size don't expect her to eat the ghost shrimp. Blood worms, brine shrimp and items very small will be eaten, probably moreso after lights out. Make sure she gets enough to eat with fast movers in the tank.

yes your bala may be small but did you know that they should be kept in groups of 3 or more, in which case a 20 wont be ok for long. although you say this is your first large aquarium, will you honestly be able to provide the 5-6 foot tank that they will need in time? if not, it would be kinder to return him now. The dwarf will be fine but goldens grow to roughly 15cm and can be mean. it may be worth researching before purchasing GL

Bala sharks, as others have said, prefer to be in groups. They are very active and can get a foot long, although they grow slowly. Honestly, thats not a big tank. Too small for balas, anyway. Sorry :(

If you like goby, why not try peacock goby. They are small and live in fresh water. It is best for you to return the bala shark and dragon goby back and maybe get some smaller loach such as yoyo loach. It is best to return the fish back before you get attach to them unless you are able to supply them a large tank. Welcome and we are all just trying to help you out. Hope non of us scare you or discourage you.
