Hey guys. I just picked up some driftwood and live plants from a friend yesterday. He needed to get rid of them so I figured I'd give live plants a try. I have a 120 gallon tank with pool filter sand substrate. Will live plants grow in this? Also, what other supplies will I need (fertilizers, conditioners. etc)? I have to say I have a new appreciation for live plants and I would like to get some more. What are some hardy species? I'll post a picture of the new plants later.

what type are the plants ? depends on what way you want to grow the plants high or low tech ?

Anubias, java ferns, java moss, some aponogetons, and crypts all will do well under low light.

Several forms of hygro will also do well under low light if you like the larger leafy stem plants.

as for water conditioners this maybe known by alot of people but i just learned this a few days ago thanks to wyldfya that prime is not the best for water conditioners because it removes some of the nutrients used by plants.

Pool filter sand is an excellent substrate for plants. You may have to use root tabs at the base of a few of your plants until a good amount of mulm builds up is all.

BTW, what sort of lights do you have and what were the plants you were given? Those are going to be your two biggest compatibility issues.

imo eco somplete is the substrate and seachem has a great line of liquid ferts. i wouldnt reccomend co2 unless you have a lot of time and desire to do a tank like that but ferts and lights will be your ticket to plants ive seen sand as well but mineralized soil base is just great.
