barbados
august 4th till august 14th, location? Guyana !!!!!!!!!!!!

my uncle is a tour guide in guyana, specializing in small groups, in the rainforests. this is my first time being able to take him up on his offer (its been 10 years at least that ive been putting it off) but this year everything seems to be lining up properly, just need to get a travel case for my rods and some other small things in order, spare reel or 2, but im pumped!

expect a lot of questions on lures as im a 100% cut and live bait guy when fishing here in barbados, hope someone out here has freshwater south america fishing experience!

thanks decker, anyone recommend a good rod case? should i just DIY one out of aluminum sheet? got a tig welding plant at work, and a powdercoat oven to pretty it up when its done, i dont like the usual tubes since i'll be taking probably a minimum of 3 rods..

seems there is no fishing licence needed, so the plan is just to touch down, head out to the Amerindian reservation which will be my base camp, familiarize myself with the locals, then probably head either up or downstream.

silly question, but it seems that the water for the most part is stained a rather dark brown, will lures still be effective?

What kind of rod? That brown is tannic acid In the water, Larry discussed it when he fished for Tarpon on some secluded freshwater lakes in South America. I belive certain colors might work better. On the episode I just watch, it showed his fishing buddy Cesar just opened a fishing shop in Suriname. I bet they could tell you what lures and colors to use. I will try to get you the name tomorrow.

forgot about this thread ! well, due to circumstances beyond my control (getting laid off and having to start a new job) trip is booted back at least another 10 months (when i can get vacation again) this sucks. however, it does give me a lot of time to prep more tackle.

my gear is multi purpose, and a bit heavy i think for river fishing, a penn 760 slammer live liner is my main go-to reel, it spends most of its time on a 9 foot ugly stick bws 1100, its my main shore fishing combo, landed up to 28 lb african pompano with it, 32 lb permits (2 in one day) and a couple of tarpon over 50 lb's (estimated) also landed a lot of wahoo with this reel on a penn mariner 5'6 rod, i keep it spooled with 20 lb test berkley trilene big game.

my new reel that im quickly falling in love with is a penn battle 8000, its a pure beast, i put it on my penn mariner 5'6 rod last weekend and put it through its paces, with a 36 lb wahoo being the end result, this fish was a personal best on sub 20 lb test mono for me, it was on 15 lb berkley trilene :) still need to decide what rod to put it on for beach/shore fishing, i dont use anything longer than 9 feet... maybe another ugly stik friday, havnt decided yet.

ive also got an 8 foot ugly stik with a cheapie shakespear reel, its been going strong for about a year now and i abuse it, a lot of water, a lot of sand.. i might get a small battle 3000 or 4000 for that rod as i really am liking the feel of this reel.
