I plan on doing my first planted tank, the fish I'm keeping prefer low lighting, so the plants need to require that to.

the tank is going to be 24x24x12 and will be filtered with a sponge filter, I was going to do a small wet/dry but the fish will be breeding and dont like to much flow.

theres going to be a peice of driftwood and some caves, but I dont know what type of plants would look good in the tank, or what type of lights I need, or if i need c02, or a special typer of gravel.

I'm using brown color quartz as the substrate.

much help would be appreciated.

ive had a lot of sucess with a guppy tank with those specs i kept java fern and moss they say the ferns need a lot of light but mine grew thick n flush with just a flora grow t5 co2 is tricky unless you are into testing and keep tight water parameters

I'll be waiting for your return with questions. :D

o trust me, you will get flooded in about 2 days :D

tabbing links to plants and all that good stuff my friend!

haven't heard back from you, So I'll post in here.

1.) Would it be better for me to just use a sponge filter on the tank? its going to be 2x2x1 (30gallons). Or would it be better to use a wet/dry?

2.) For lighting, I want one of those units that have the 4 legs, and than the unit at the top. so the light wont be resting on the top of the tank. I don't need super bright lights, but I'll have some top water plants so the light will be blocked out, making the tank "dim" which is what I want.

3.) So I'm going to need plants for the top of the water that require medium to high light, while the plants towards the bottom to be medium to low.

4.) I'm going to be using colorquarts as a substrate is this good for most plants?

5.) should I use a c02 system? If so, will a diy one work?

6.) is there anything special I'm going to need to buy for the plants, like fertalizer or something?

CO2 never hurts, so long as you don't have too much. A wet/dry will make injecting co2 a waste of time. A basic sponge filter with a powerhead is a good way to filter the tank. Depending on the plants, fertilizers may not be necessary, but they never are going to be a bad thing to have on hand.
