This is my first planted tank that i set up yesterday. I got the flourite substrate and have a Co2 system. I bought a strip light but it wasnt the right kind so i think i might forget about it and buy more lamps and get more compact flourescents. If i get two more compact flourescents will i have enough light?? and should i leave my dwarg hairgrass in the pot or plant it?
Tank is 16 gallons

sorry...the water is a little cloudy and so are the tank walls from the flourite

Howdy,

Nice tank for first try  I'd get the plants out of the pots. CO2 is only really useful if your lights are perfect and you use liquid ferts. And even then, it's often just a waste of money (see sticky in this forum). Make sure to turn your CO2 off at night, as your plants don't use it then.

Good lighting is essential. Make sure to get a good set of light strips, with quality fluorescent bubs for aquatic plants (e.g. from www.seraessentials.com). That is much more important than anything else. You can get by with screw-in power compacts (e.g. Coralife), I have 40 Watts of these on a 10 gal.

Best of luck,
HarleyK

i would wait tell your hg recovers a bit before replanting.
i would make you wattage around 4wpg if you going to use co2.
btw use the actual wattage not the equivalent of incandscent wattage.
example package may say 16 watts(flourscent)= 50 watts(incandscent).
when in doubt go with the lowest number on the the package.

btw im not sure how the 6500k(or whatever) cf bulbs compare to actual plant bulbs. even if there kelvin rating is the same there spectrums could differ. but people do use those on there refugiums in saltwater tanks

alright thanks..i am going to see what happens with the CF becuase i just added another one. If nothing is going good then i will buy a strip. Im only 16 and dont have the resources or money right now for a great setup but i figured iwould give it a go lol

anymore suggestions anyone?

First, read the stickies about planted tanks - there's a lot of info that is going to help you grow in the hobby of planted aquariums. But also know, we are ALL constantly learning new things about planted tanks. Just make sure to have patience, and be willing to make mistakes along the way. It's very rewarding once you create something beautiful.

My suggestions would be to (1) make sure you have adequate lighting and (2) get some plant fertilizers.

HarleyK mentioned using the compact fluorescents on a 10 gallon tank. I actually use the same watt to gallon ratio and have had tremendous success. I get the light bulbs from Walmart. They're 20 watt GE 6700K bulbs that come in a two pack for less than $10 (Plants need a light spectrum b/n 5500K and 10,000K so this works well). I would imagine for your 16 gallon tank, you could probably do just fine using two bulbs as well (the extra 6 gallons isn't going to make too much of a difference).

Regarding plant fertilizers, at some point you're probably going to want to purchase a plant supplement you put in the water. For the plants you're growing, I would recommend Seachem Flourish. You can grab a long-lasting bottle for around $6-7 and the product provides minerals that plants need to thrive. You've already made a good start with using Flourite, but it doesn't provide all that plants need. That's where the Flourish comes in.

Other than that, it looks great so far! Keep posting your progress and feel free to ask more questions! :headbang2

Thanks...yea so right now im running two 23 watt CFL's on the 16. I put flourish tabs in the flourite the first day. Since i did that should i still get the excel? I was also putting a small dose of this liquid fertilizer into the water. Should i be afraid of overfertilizing?

Excel has been said to help stop algae growth, although i would never recommend it for that use exclusively. From personal experience, I think it simply helps plants have another source of carbon available (as it advertises). I've been happy with the product. But it will be personal preference as to whether or not you decide to purchase it.

Regarding "overdosing" of fertilizers - yes, you should be conscious of how much you're putting into your tank and I would recommend creating a dosing schedule. Basically, you only want to put the amount of fertilizers in the water that your plants can use up. Otherwise, it's going to cause algae growth. And in case you were wondering, no, fertilizers do not harm fish (unless you dumped the whole bottle in or something).

alright thanks for the info....right now some of my plants are starting to green up. I am just worrying about the hairgrass becuase it was pretty hard to find. Its got roots growing around the pot so idk if i should plant it
