So here is my first planted tank. It's a 2.5 gallon tank where my betta lives in. I decided to pimp his home since he looked bored with the previous simplistic theme I arranged for him.

Well, it's obviously a mess!:nilly: You can still see the nylon strings sticking around, and the moss was obviously tied up in a very very lousy fashion.
What's in there?
Christmas moss tied to a piece of driftwood
Riccia tied to a slate
Water lettuce floating in the surface
A betta splendens
A 4mm ghost shrimp that I cannot find. Probably got eaten by the betta

I don't have any lighting set up. The tank gets direct sunlight maybe for 2-3hrs everyday during the afternoon. I don't have a filtration system so there's no aeration in there an there's minimal water movement. I don't use fertilizers.
I obviously don't know what I'm doing I just bought the riccia and the moss without thinking. Any comment and suggestion would greatly help.:)

Seems like a fine arrangement health-wise. I like the look, too. Not sure how I would improve on it besides, as suggested above, adding a little filtration or at least movement to keep dust off the plants.

dude i am doinf the same thing for my betta!!! i will have to use the driftwood idea. i will send you a pix when i get it done, i hope it turns out like yours, yous looks sweet...

add some Excel to help your plants grow a little better. artificial lighting also :)

Hey its just a betta tank!

But seriously if you want to improve it move it away from the window add some artificial light maybe a clip on 13W. Put a small hang-on filter or maybe just a small airstone to get some water movement.

It's in a far worse place than my window, it's in my balcony! It get's a full blast of afternoon sunlight.:nilly: I will take on that suggestion and move it indoors..:D

I have a question about lighting though. See, I decided to put this outside to compensate for the lack of a proper lighting setup. But what if I decided not to buy any lighting equipment and move the tank indoors, will the plants die? I will probably move it to the room adjacent to the balcony. And it's very well lighted the whole day, so will that amount of light be sufficient?

It's the shape of the driftwood that probably made this setup sweet. I love that piece of wood, the curves are really nice.
I'll look forward to that picture!

You would think the sun has got to be the best light but its not for aquatic plants in a tank. Artificial light is better so you can control it. You could place the tank under a desk light or a table light. Your still not going to get the best plant growth with that. But this is what you got.
