So Cal
Hello all, I go by "Rakie" on any forum you'll meet me on, i've got about a million hobbies, and aquariums is up near the top. Little bit about the animals i've had.

Oddballs: Tarantulas, scorpions, Snakes, Lizards, Turtles, Frogs / toads, Millipedes and tropical centipedes. And a fluffy dog.

On fish... a fish tank was my first "pet" i got when i was 4, a 10g with a black Pleco three swords, an albino cory and some fancy tail guppies.

Since then... Everything. 2g Pico reef, 10g nano reef, 20L SPS nano reef, 40g breeder LPS / Softie propagation tank (I sold Corals for some cash) 90g FOWLR / 90g Aggressive / 90g reef. All these now gone, 90g reused at every opportunity (now sold)

10g planted, 40g planted (Pre LPS / Softie Prop tank) 90g Tanganyika aggressive tank (Pre, salt water experiance)

Well. as you see, i've had mostly pretty fish, some aggressive salt fish but nothing too amazing...

The reason i've always been drawn to these "monster" fish that i've yet to own, is simply cuz of my uncle... Back in the day when i was very young, he had a 100g which used to be much more impressive then now. He had the coolest things i've ever seen in it. He had some buddies that had MUCH larger tanks, and I didnt know at the time, but he used to sell space in his tank as a grow out tank... if he had room and you wanted your 4" Red tail to have a nice home till it was like, 10" or so, he'd do it for ya.

So i gotta see all kinds of cool things, I remember the Gar and a Huge arowana the most. He also had a few red tail cats and other gars and arowana of all species (not all at once, of course), the only two fish he had that were "His" was some type of Lung Fish... All i know was it hailed from africa, he got it as a 2" little worm and that guy took off to over 4' before he donated it to a museum (They killed it :irked:) And an Electric Catfish, who had his own 100g. I miss that guy.

SO... now this 100g tank is mine, he hasnt used it for awhile, its been redone with silicone (AGA tank) I really love that I have a chance to house some new fish in this glass box that shaped so much of my love for animals. Sadly, when i got into saltwater when i was a bit younger, i discovered a 100g tank isn't big enough for half the things he had, and then i found he was growing out for his buddies.

So this is far from my area of expertise... What do you all think I should try and get in there ? The things that really catch my interest are the Gar and Arowana. Aggressive things, and things with teeth just get me going. Im sure the story is the same for most of you here ;p

Anyways, i look forward to trolling around quite a bit more and getting started on this tank within a few months, im going to be soaking up as much info as i can.

umm no true gar can go in a 100 gallon tank for life same with arowana sadly to say.

but if you want aggressive fish you cold get a red devil pair in there.
or some other kinds of cichlids.

oh and welcome to monsterfishkeepers

Yeah, I remembered the fish being quite large, but of course i was quite small back then ;p

I've had many cichlid tanks for quite some time, im looking for something a bit larger, maybe even just one fish in there.

Sorry... idk how to edit... but, i apparently need 5 posts to do lots of things anyways so, nps..

Umm... yeah I didn't mention but i wasnt expecting a real gar... I was thinking a few Needle nose gar... im not sure how many I can house, also I have no idea what their full size is, i keep reading 6,8 or 12 inches online, no set actual size. Anyways... id like to keep several of them, if possible. Cool little fish..

Also... what are other speacies of gar that aren't "True Gar"

You happy to have a nifty fish index I could look up ?

heh... being back in freshwater is kinda confusing after such a long time with salt, its a lot cheaper tho :D

How about using the 100g as a growout and then buy a larger tank. :D Nuttin' wrong with a bigger tank.

if only I could... Almost bit the bullet on a 240g Reef awhile back, fully loaded for a great price... Souther California guys really blow it out cheap when they leave the hobby. Usually salt or fresh.

But i mean, i had a well stocked 10g nano reef I blew over 2k on... no way I could afford a 240

But, someday i'll get one ;p

Im going to say tho... this site is a freaking bad influence... in reefs, 100g is still nice sized, 240 is still large... Here, 300g look like the new 10g : /

;p

That's why most of us only have fresh water tanks. I got my 250g for $250 and have less than a grand into it (not counting fish).

Yeah... I haven't had a FW tank in a long time, and i really like the Gars and Arowana, i know they are too large for my tank... but some of the false gar look nice enough to keep around, id really like that.
