:nilly:

First post! I've been lurking here for a while, particularly in the SW and freshwater stingray forums. I've got fair secondhand experience via my friends dad who was a big SW fish keeper and I've learned a lot, and Ive had the odd FW and TONS of reptiles. I'm not new to fish, leave it at that. On to business....

Keep in mind this is something I would like to try after quite a few years experience with SW fish, as I have only what I learned through my friend and liveaquria, wetwebmedia, and some other sites. When I have said experience, my view will probably change so this is an extremely naive question... lol

Alright, just assume in this situation that I have a perfect size tank and perfect feeding, whatever. (Thats not what I'm asking about anyway) I was thinking of future predator tanks, and I have a few candidates in mind. So this is a 'would they not eat each other' question. I was thinking epaulette shark (is the new epaulette species in the aquarium trade?) or some related catshark, a blue-spotted stingray (yeah I know about how frail they can be in captivity), a volitans lion or possibly a radiated, and a zebra moray. As far as I am aware, there wouldnt be much conflict between THOSE right? Heres the complicated part. Along with these, could a LARGE peacock mantis coexist peacefully with them? I think they are utterly fascinating and I'd love to keep one at one point. Although they usually eat tank fish, I'm worried about others eating them. Or could they potentially harm the others with the clubs? Or would they not care as long as they have a nice cave? Now last question... Can corals/sponges/anemones/other sessile inverts live with these same fish? I always see big predator tanks devoid of coral. But I don't know if thats due to the big triggers and puffers that people usually have or anything. Or is it just safer for the coral and fish to not be together? I was thinking an electric flame scallop, crocea clam, some kinda fan and feather duster, a tree sponge, some large anemones and maybe a starfish or urchin. I really dont know enough about corals to choose any particulars. So to summarize, would a shark, stingray, lion, moray, mantis, and corals all get along without problems or am I just an idiot with too high expectations? Thanks! :P

i'm not sure about the shark and lion, but pretty sure the shark will eat the mantis. or the moray.
the thing about marine pred tanks, if you want coral, is the massive filtration and circulation needed, and the limited inverts you can keep. nothing stinging or sharp for safety of the shark.

Oh you have a coral catshark! Arent those only about 2 feet? I was thinking about those as well but I've only ever seen one for sale. And would you happen to know anything about the new epaulette species in New Guinea? They looked stunning but Ive never heard anything of them since. Would be awesome in someone had them. Heck, anyone have normal epaulettes here?

Yeah I was doubting the mantis... it was kind of a passing thought, and it shouldnt be too much a problem to keep alone anyway. When you say inverts I CAN keep with them, what would that include, with or without the mantis? Something sharp? Did you mean ths stingray or ome particular invert? Ive seen sharks and rays kept together all the time... But just assume in this situation I have perfect filatration and tank size. This is simply a combatabilty question, I'll figure out filtration and stuff when I actually see myself getting one (a while off). You sure a shark or anything could actually eat a foot long mantis with a bullet -speed strike? That would hurt an awful lot.

Lol, you have a burm and sun skink too? Well theres something I DO know about! :P

Welcome to MFK! I think the massive amounts of nitrate would require a gigantic skimmer, and massive water changes. I think you would be wasting money on the coral.

oh i'm sorry- when i said invert i meant coral and the such.
heh. yeah coral cats average about two feet.
new eppie? i have heard something about this, but is it just people "rediscovering" the freycinet's eppie or something?

This is all hypothetical. Just assume I have said gigantic skimmer and plenty of money to spend on coral... I'm only wondering about compatability. I might not get to keep this or a similar setup for 10+ years. and it might be a whole new set of fish by then. Until them I'm gonna try and find a LFS around here and see if I can get a mantis, just for a first try at saltwater. But I take that back, I AM new to fish.

New epaulette shark... they call this first one the silky (cant find latin name) and the second one I think is called the Papua epaulette (seems to be un named) Maybe by the time I'm able to start something big, these guys might be avaliable. Or at least normals easier to find lol.

So whered you get the coral cat? Any pics?

And does anyone know any mantis keepers on MFK? Thanks!

Another question... whats the deal with dragon eels? Are they mega ggresive like I've heard? How big can they get? How would they get along with a lion/shark/ray/mantis? Too bad theyre 1000+ bucks though...

Again, assume I have the proper setup, its hypothetical.

I and a few other ppl have had or do have mantis and there are quite a few threads already that will answer any general questions. Dragon moreys are fish eaters but they arent really agressive they will just eat if they are hungry. Its fimbriates and tesseletas that are the real agressive species.

The least problem I have with this question is the mantis. ALthough I would love it in a big fancy predator tank, if theyres the slightest doubt its pretty easy to just pop it in a 20 gal with no problem. What I'm really worried about is a dragon eel vs. zebra. Are any of the dragon eel species more or less vicious than the others? Japanese? Hawaiian? Mediterranean (I think thats one)? How big are they compared to a zebra?

I was watching some hawaiian dragon and zebra footage on youtube, man that was cool!
