First red ever! 24 in three spot. Also cought a 19" flounder same day. Not Alaska, but fun anyway.

What type of fish is it?

red drum, also known as a redfish. Common along the gulf coast. Caught it wading. Tons of fun.

I'm a guide in Alaska so am used to fights that last a long time, longest fight was 4 hours on a 365 lb halibut.
This fish did put on a nice pull though, probably my longest in texas. I was standing in water up to my chest and fish circled me several times forcing me to spin to keep the fish ahead of me. Had it landed in just a couple minutes. Was fishing a medium action rod with 15lb test. Think I'll down size to extend the fight. And yes, it was tasty.
