First saltwater tank and hydrometer question?

Ok so I converted my freshwater fluval chi (5 gallon) I added 1/2 cup of salt and on my hydrometer the salinity level it didn't reach the middle yet and my question is does the hydrometer show the exact salinity right away or should I wait a couple days for the real results?

If your using Instant Ocean just make sure all the salt has dissolved, I would measure salinity level after 24 hrs.

Instant ocean mixes at 1/2 cup per gallon if I remember right. Also check your hydrometer, there is probably a temperature your water has to be at for it to work correctly.
