So I am planning on buying my first freshwater ray. I will probably get a motoro, as I can't really afford to pay over $100 for the fish. I have a 90 gallon tank with a fine sand bottom for it when it's small, but when it's larger I have a 180 gallon bare bottom that it can go in. Do angelfish make good tankmates? What about african butterflyfish and bleeding heart tetras?

plan on getting larger (wider) then a 180 in about 1 1/2 - 2 years time.
angelfish... maybe. I keep discus with mine and they are fine since they are quite large (5-6") but don't keep small angelfish, and the other small fish will probably end up as snacks.

What about a hystrix or a reticulata. I really do not have room for a bigger tank. If it got too big, then the LFS would gladly take it as they sell lots of big fish (RTCs, Pacus, P. Bass, etc.). If I could I'd build it a pond, but my mom says no more tanks. I have 15 aquariums. Since I'm only 15, I have to make do with what I have.

Also, do Geophagus make good tank-mates? I would keep the Geophagus full time in the 90 gallon to sift the sand bed. How about 3 needlefish (Xenentodon cancila). They would eventually go in the 180 if they are compatible.

Does this sound like a good mix for the 180. 1 Stingray, 1 Senegal Bichir, 3 Large Clown Loaches, 3 Needlefish, and some silver dollars? The filter is a wet dry filter for a 500 gallon tank. I used to keep fancy goldfish in here and I really like to overfilter.

well, never mind. My mom decided that she wants fancy goldfish again:(
