I am building a sump for my 55g for a few reasons. Increasing bioload, aquaclears grinding, not enough gph, not enough BB

So i studied a little and according to this http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205645 a 1" thick tubing will pass 600gph to pass. So i know this is a stupid question but, if i get a 600gph or so pump, will that be over kill, not enough or what?

attached is my design. Slightly sloppy, yes. But will it work?

Assuming that your pump is 600gph at the head you are doing that will give you 5x turnover. Not too bad but I like a little better. Also a 1" pipe is capable of moving 600gph but that doesn't mean that it will (every 90 or other turn lowers this number). I would do 2 of them.

Simple design. Should get the job done. I would add some fine filter media though.

You'll be more than fine with a 600 gph pump. The guy who said you'll need two doesn't understand that the more contact time (slower flow) that bb has with water is better. Sumps are for bio not mech.

I was referring to 2 overflows, not pumps.

Oh... Okay. Sorry. Yeah, add two overflows. Always have more possible intake gph than possible return gph.

Sumps can be designed to be very thorough mechanical filters... it's a shame more people do not take advantage of their full potential...

The design above offers both mechanical and bio filtration...
