Hello all, Im new here and this is my first thread on MFS...I've owned aggressive fish for the past 10 years, but only stumbled upon gars about a month ago..I first bought one from my lfs and eventually ended up going back for the remaining two.. something about these armored fish that really intrigues me.. i put the first one in with my flowerhorn which usually beats the living crap out of every other fish i put in his tank.. but the poor guy just shrank when faced with the gars menacing stare. I've since moved my three gars to a bigger tank considering their size (1 ft).. ANYWAY, when i got these guys the lfs owner said they were 'needlenose' which even i could see they are not, but since I've just recently come across this type of fish for the first time, i'm hoping i can get an ID from the pros in the game..
low and behold...

Those are Gator gars Atractosteus spatula...Good luck with them..

i'm sure you already read my post in the previous thread.

how big are they at the moment?

what size tank are they in?

Tank is 600 gallons, they seem to be comfortable at the moment.. one is a little over a foot long and the other two are slightly smaller. I thought they might be gator gars based on appearance but the spots kinda threw me off... possibly a hybrid? if they are gators, ill just have to plan another upgrade within the next year or so... wont part with these monsters, the bigger the fish, the more impressive. Im just confused because they had them with all types of chiclids at the lfs with no problems.. I currently have 2 large spiny eels and a sun catfish in the tank with them... so far so good..

u kno how big there ganna get right?...
good luck

the cichlids would surely have become dinner. i really dont think they are hybrids. they look pretty normal to me. what are the dimensions of the tank? that may hold him over for a little while. from what i have read gator gar tend to top out around 5-6 feet in captivity.

5 to 6 feet ?? in the span of how many years?

besides 600g tank, do u have a BIG pond ??? or a HUGE pool ???

im jst wondering... 3 of yr alligtr gars grow up in the nxt 5 years.... wow...~~~ a cool water monster, they will be....!!!!

anyway, wellcome to MFK.

feel free to ask ques, and share pic. :)

im sure lots of Gar's pro here will give their feedbck to u.....
