Hello everyone! It's my first time post on MFk yay! :D. I've been a fan of fish for a long time and until recently have decided to start my own freshwater fish tank. At first I wanted to have spotted gar but quickly realised that I did not have the room for them. But soon after I found bichirs and I fell in love with the Ornate Bichir. My questions are basically what do I need to take care of them? I heard that they would be fine in a 30 gallon tank. I don't know if thats to small but I only want to purchase two ornates and they would be the only fish in the tank. Also any other information that you can provide is greatly appreciated!

ornates wont live in there for life

For ornates, a 100 gallon would be bare minimum.

Definitely try a Senegal Bichir instead. They don't get nearly as large and you could probably get away with having ONE by itself in a 30 for a while though I might get something bigger like a 55 or at least a 40 breeder because they're so wide for it. Good luck!

Ornates get large and are one of the least active Bichirs..30 gallon will not work for Any but if you must... try a Senegal followed by Delhezi.

MY SENEGALIS VERY ACTIVE. HE GREETS ME WHEN I WALK NEAR THE TANK.

hi ya wretched,
welcome to the club. my first polyp is a ornate too! It's alright to keep em since u fell in love with them in the first place. They do fine as a first time bichirs. Eventually you need to get a wider tank. Other than that, maintain clean water and give them your tender loving care. They look beautiful even when they are majestically big...My only 2 ornates are exceptionally active than my other polyp. The moment i switched on lights and stand in front of the tank, they race left to right begging me to feed them...

ps: don't keep a pleco or an algae eater together w them!!

Im not strictly refined to a 30 gallon tank, that was just some information that i recieved that was apparently wrong. Anything else though that i should know about ornates before I just go diving into this?
