hello i'm in the processof building my first diy filter the line from the tank will be 1.5inch pvc gravity feed into my filter it will be a colum type filter with the water running thru the a mec pad then bio balls and then carbon into the clean water chamber i was wondering how to figure out how big of a pump to use so the water dont build up to fast and the pump dont suck the filter dry

It's all about the over flow. /the amount the overflows, can never be more than the pump putting the water in to the tank. However, if your overflow is too small, then you would need a smaller pump. Just make another overflow if you have a problem....

Your describing a simple syphon, is that correct?

Not the best idea unless you put an anti-syphon hole just below the water line of the tank. But this system has restart problems too.

Using http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15733 will solve these problems. This is what bigspizz is referring to.

1.5" pipes...what size tank & sump?
