I came across a Yellow Tail Barracuda a few weeks ago that REALLY peaked my interest. I didn't buy it because I knew nothing about them. I spent a lot of time researching them on here and a few other forums.
As Krich said, technically they're not barracudas. They are just called that because of the physical similarities. The two types I could find the most info on were the Red Tail and the Yellow Tail. Yellow tail is said to get a bit larger than the Reds (upwards of 12-14" I believe, though no one seemed to have a concrete answer). All of these fish are generally reported to be pretty skittish from what I've read. Lots of mixed reviews on keeping them. Eventually, after a bunch of research, I came across a thread where someone said "Why don't you just get an African Pike (H. Odoe)?". It grows larger than the cuda's, and tends to be less nervous. It's not overly aggressive, just a true predator.
So after another week of researching Odoe's, I've ordered 2 of them from a vendor here. They should be around 4-5". I plan on growing them out in a 40br until I feel comfortable putting them in my 180 with my silver aro.
If you are anything like me, you were drawn to the Barracuda because its a silvery, toothy predator. Depending on your tank size, I would give the Odoe some serious thought. Seems to be a very under appreciated fish on this forum.
