I picked up a 2 inch delhezi. How long can I keep him in a 55 (normal stock LxWxH)? He ate blood worms last night and I was thinking about giving him tilapia, shrimp and earthworms as well. Tempts at 75-78. Water levels at 4inches below the lid. 2x 70g hangoff aquaclear filter. Small airpump. All openings sealed with plastic and tape. I would like to get more bichirs like the endi and ornate but not sure how that will work with size. He will be moved to ether a 125 or 210. But would like to grow him up first. Any help please!

That sounds like a great plan. If you decide to get an endli or ornate they both grow faster than a del so you would want to watch and make sure they don't get to big for him. Especially watch the endli they are known to prey on smaller bichirs. Other than that I'd say he could stay in the 55 for a long time but if you already have those other tanks up and running I would move the del at 4"-6" to a larger tank so that he will have even more room to swim and grow

^ weeksii is in the same league as them, my 5-6 inchers head has a bigger mouth then my 7-8 inch palmas buettokoferri. Crazy really once I saw em next to each other I was surprised, any of the palmas complex and mokelembembe would for sure work w/o worry of being eaten.

Like Dr. B said though, if you go the endli/ornate/weeksii or any Lower Jaw bichir be careful about size. I had a 6 inch ornate eat a 4 inch Senegal once. This was when I was first getting back into it and was feeding em guppies I bred.

Right now he's on a glass bottom, should I give him sand or gravel substraght or do they not really care?

Most members use sand mostly being cautious of their polys swallowing gravel and the fish not being able to pass it through . Personally all of my bichir were raised in aquarium's with gravel substrate,

I would definitely put sand in there because dels are known to dig which is really cool to observe. You don't need a substrate but I'd think he's appreciate it if you gave him some sand

Ok thanks for for all your comments. In glad to see everyone's comments are friendly. That dosent happen much with my posts ha
