Hey all, I just started my journey in keeping rays. I was keeping Central American Cichlids for a little over a month now in my 125 and started to get a little bored with it so i thought i'd give rays a try. I've had an aquarium since i was young so i'm def not new to all of this i just wanted to see what everyone thought of my setup thus far

125 gallon with pool filter sand

Filtration is 2 AC110's and 1 FX5
Also have 2 4 inch bubble discs running too

I have a powerhead but i havent put it in yet (Idk if i even need to)

I'm planning on keeping a pair of hystrix in there and i've gotten a lot of great info and support from DB JUNKIE and KILLARBB on this forum (Great Guys if you havent dealt with them before)

Does this sounds ok for a beginner such as myself? Just wanted to see what everyone thought :)

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Yes, But the hystrix will still get big, so you need to think about getting a bigger tank, IF you do go into ray keeping.

Yup that is a good start but in the near future you will want a 24" wide tank if not even wider

If you are not prepared to upgrade your tank or re-home the rays within a year or two you might want to hold off

Maybe a hystrix keeper can chime in on how long a 18" wide tank should last you I have never kept them

I have heard a pair of Hystrix can stay in a 125 for life though

they could but it would be pretty mean imo

its also very good to have the extra water volume, rays eat about 5x more then any fish

on a 125 gal w 2 rays in the 10" range you would prob have to do a 25% waterchange every other day to keep nitrates in check

X2 - Pete & Vamptrev. You always need more water... If you are planning on getting a bigger tank, then go ahead and make the investment and get the bigger tank and THEN invest in the rays. Trust me! Once you have 1 ray, then you will want another, and another and another and so on.... Trust me.... I thought I was just going to have 1 or 2. NOW i have 6! I have them in a 125 unfortunately! BUT Im turning to power on, on my 280gal, 30"wide tank tomorrow hoping, if everything goes as planned, that way I can have it cycled and the rays a new home... as for my 125gal. I do a water change pretty much 35gal every other day, sometimes daily. All mine are juvies tho, but IF I were to add one more they would prolly start getting cramped. haha.

DEF be looking for a bigger tank, or just go ahead and get one, then get rays...
