Ok so as someone who knows a lot about fw my friends have asked me to set up a small salt tank for their daughter. We cant do fw because the mom is actually deathly allegic to fw algea!!! Now what she has asked me to do and i dont think i like it, but like i said idk much qbout sw. She wants to do a clown fish in a 10g tank. How hard is that to set, up maintain, all that...detailed input for or against is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Its not hard at all. She might want to go bigger though, remember that, the smaller the tank, the harder it is to maintain!! You should use crushed coral mixed with sand for the substrate to keep PH balance, and also use live rock!! But I wouldn't do any less than 55gallons for salt, its easier to maintain than a 10 gallon.

Right well i know that much from having my own. Thats what i have is a 55 w/ mixed cichlids. But she asked me as a favor to figure out how and how much. I figured it was going to be a task and a small education. But what i need to know is how not why! I might be able to talk her into a 20-29 but space is tue biggest issue.

And shes not allergic to the sw algaes? a 10g for a single clown will be fine with live rock and live sand. water changes should be easy as u could easidly do 25% without having to buy alot of water. but i would say to keep the parameters in check u def dont want to over stock so one clown and maybe 2 hermits would be ok. just buy the water add water. then sand and live rock. buy basic marine test kit to test water u also need a hydrometer, heater and of course filter. i dont think imo u need a skimmer or anything. if u want more details post this in the sw section here. :)

SW isn't hard at all, but I would try to go bigger than 10 gallons if possible. Smaller tanks can fluxuate a lot in terms of salinity etc., and it's easier to maintain the proper levels in a larger tank. That being said, 10 gallons is still quite do-able if you pay attention to it daily. Good luck!

Right like i said, iknow the advantages of a bigger tank. But this is a project for a friend. And ya i thought i was wierd she wants allergic to sw algea, but she can go swimming here in fl but not in MN where their from! Anyways ya maybe ill start a new thread there.
