hello fellows,

After visiting my friend house for holiday, saw house 18 collection of datnoic tank set up. Its such amazing fish. It make me want to start a dat tank and i have a few question about it. I've been keeping piranha for years, but for dat will be different for me.

what is the best species (in your opinion)
what is the average price for each species (dont want to get rip of)
what are the minmun tank? i am thinking 125gallon

I want to get every species of dat and put them together, is this posible? also i heard dat can be keep in brackish water?

thanks

anyone help me out please.

Average price depends on size and species. Figure any species over 8" is going to be over $100.

Your 125 will be fine for a LONG time but the ST and IT may outgrow it.

Best species is which one you like the best. NTTs tend to be harder to keep then other though.

NGT and AT are found in brackish waters in the wild, but can be kept in fresh successfully.

ST, IT, NTT are all fresh water.

what are the most pricey speciese and the cheapest? From I my understand widebar are most and indo are cheapest. Is this correct?

Correct to a certain degree. Depend on the size. Widebar is banned from export, thus, you can't find them at size smaller than 5"-6", while you can find Indo, NGT, Silver (AT) or thin bar (NTT) at smaller size. At the same size, I would say widebar is more pricey than any other datnoid (some maybe disagree with me ;)) but it is what it is... I would love to have a tank with almost all variety of datnoids (still doesn't like the silver that much). At one time, I have ST, NGT and NTT in the same tank, and each of them have its own beauty.. I regret to sell the two NTT, but I was glad that the person I sold them to is local and can still be in touch :naughty: If you have the mean, get two of each type for your 125 (may not be able to find the widebar, but some Indo does look close as widebar with the exception of the tail marking and maybe the color) and you'll enjoy keeping them. Good luck on your project :)
BTW from affordable to pricey - Indo & AT, NTT, NGT, ST

Fortunately for me...I think the IT are the best looking. I don't get the craze for ST other than the fact they are hard to find.

I have 2 IT that I absolutely love...and going by looks alone I want a NTT next. I will probably add more types as I come across them!!!!

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I don't really want to pay extra cash for just a widebar. Indo look nice themself.

Thanks again.
