Ok I have had fake plants but just yesterday I decided to get some live ones. So I bought some mexican oak leaf and I think its brazilian myrio. I've got a ctenopoma a knight goby and 2 rams living with them. The Mex. oak leaf look alittle sick (brown spots dieing leaves wierd grayish covering on a few leaves). I have only had them a day though. Maybe a fertilizer?

Why did you buy a plant that wasn't healthy? Fertilizer is not the answer right away. Prune the dead and dying leaves from the plant. Give the plant some time to establish itself. Add fertilizers after the plant starts to grow.

Its a shame your brazillian pennywort is fake - that stuff grows crazy fast. I used to sell it all the time. Dont have any in my planted tank now though. Keeping a knight goby and a ctenapoma in a planted tank is probably pretty unusual - most require fairly high salt levels. Plants can tolerate too much intheir water.

Ya I know, slowly broght the goby to somewhat FW (1 teaspoon for 5 gl) . But what is the plant infront of my fake stuff, and what do you sugest I do with the mex oak?

First off I didnt see this but - hi from the stevens point area - second off I really dont know what could be wrong. For most people ferts is a bad idea no matter what. You have to have good lighting and co2 supplementation in my mind before doing anything too serious in the ferts department.

Substrate like gravel can take a toll on stem plants - but usually they just rot from the bottom - no spotting like you are describing.

What sort of light are you using, and what are your parameters? Where did you buy the plants?

Sorry dont have a water testing kit, have to relay on the LFS for that. I'm using the lighting that came with the starter kit I bought it with. The guy said it would be fine, and I didn't want it too bright for the rams. Think I should just try some more mex oak? Looks like its almost tottaly dead. It has no leaves from the bottom to about 2in, then the rest are all spot deteriorating. The stems are also tottaly brown. And with the fish, what do you recomend for fertilizer, co2, and plants for them to hide in? Also can you ID the other plant in the last pic on the right? I got them from my lfs, hoffers.

welcome to planted tanks. a few things.... most of the time the light that comes with the tank isnt enough for plants. best case is low light plants like anubias java ferns and moss. those plants looked like they were grown emersed meaning out of the water and look different and transform into submerged growth over time. the mexican oak looks like wisteria.

if you upgrade the light you will have more options but it wont be too bright. even the super high light tank the amount of light isnt close to the amount the sun shines over them. do you know what kind of fixture you have now?

I just checked, its an aqueon 17w, in my 36 bow. Also I just took out the mex oak, gonna get my $ back and get a giant anubias. Also the other plant (any ideas what it is) looks like some of the leaves are dieing.

No its def not wisteria. Just some weird disease killed it. Almost looks like its going to the other plant. Also should I take the carbon out of my filter?
