Looks like a sump with fx5 for the return pump. Kinda an odd way to do things I suppose

I think you are right.
Since the water is being pulled from a sump, and not a siphon from the tank I would think the return rate is awful low. Am I right in my thinking?

Perfectly right, also causes more stress on the impeller but I guess its a more effective way of filtration depending on how much the flow was diminished.

Ya I cant imagine its good for the motors to have to push extra head when they were designed for a purpose that doesnt have any. Would be much better off imo running 2 canister filters separate from the sump. Could have had quite a nice sump setup for what those 2 fx5 cost

2fx5 r not sufficient enough for 240g with lot of fishes.
I have a sump laying around but no pump. So I connect the sump to fx5s n loaded them with only bio balls.
Now water is super clean.

Water is 10x cleaner with a sump. Should get a big sump...instead of 2 fx5s.
