Hey guys, I've had some solid success with some basic plants in most of my freshwater tanks, old 75 gallon had good growth with anubias, water sprite, swords, wisteria, etc and my 46 bow has good growth with the same plants, but i've never used plant specific substrate or I guess that you could say I've never had a full blown "planted tank". That's bout to change and would like as many opinions as people are willing to offer.

To start off the tank is a 20 long and will be filtrated by a Fluval 405, I already have cycled media ready to roll and will be starting it after christmas. For lighting I am planning on ordering a dual bulb 6500k T5 that is 48W and for substrate I am planning to use Seachem's Fluorite with some black gravel on top. As far as fish stocking as of now it will have 6 cory cats that survived my girlfriends tank and from there I'm still considering what to do.

What I really need suggestions on is a good front to back distribution of plants, I want it to have a fairly full look, thinking anubias in the foreground and maybe some grassy plants, swords or something a little larger in the back, and i'm not really sure on mid level plants, was reading maybe saggitarius of some kind may be good? I'm completely open to ordering some plants or trying new things, so if you have an idea please let me know it!

Any pictures of you guys tanks would be appreciated along with any input you want to give about types of plants, placing of plants, light cycles, fish stocking, whether any of the substrate sifting freshwater snails are a good idea, etc. Like I said this will be the first time I will be truly dedicating a tank to live plants even though i've had success with some of the more common species. I know I wrote a novel but to anybody who read this far I appreciate it! Laptop is busted so if it takes me a while to respond to anything I'm not ignoring anybody I promise! Thanks!

after doing a little more reading really liking the idea of a baby tear carpet with anubias in the foreground swords in the back and crypt of some nature in the middle, thoughts?

Im by no means an expert on the subject, but sounds like a good start to me.
As far as the substrate, im still not completely convinced that flourite or laterite either one are necessary for a planted tank so long as proper nutrients, proper lighting, and proper co2 are provided. I had amazing luck with simple gravel covered with sand til my chinese algae eaters distroyed most of my plants. But as i said, im no expert so i could be wrong.

Running a Fluval 405 on a 20 gallon long will produce a lot of water movement, current, and surface agitation. Not what you really want in a planted tank. I would go with a smaller filter..

yeah i just thought about the filter thing earlier after reading some more about CO2 that agitation could be a pain, will probably look to sell the canister and buy a pair of AC50s.

current thought is to try anubias in the foreground, a baby tear carpet, crypts and mondo grass in the middle, and maybe some vals or micro swords in the back - thoughts?

One aquaclear 50 would provide enough filtration for a 20 long. Your plant selection seems fine. Anubias nana or anubias coffeefolia would work ad they don't grow very tall or fast.

yeah, still molding the idea but im now looking at anubias nana in the foreground, some crypto in the back, and some dwarf hair grass as a carpet perhaps, still trying to decide what i want to use as a carpet like plant or if theres one i can make work with low tech setup

seems good but you might want something to provide shade for the crypts since they are a lower light plant, on my 46 I had a single T5 bulb and the crypt that was completely exposed to the light just withered away to nothing while the one in the shade of a sword grew at a good rate

yeah im still trying to figure that in to effect too, toying with the idea of ludwigia instead of crypto just not 100% yet, once I get the tank rolling and decide whether or not I want to get some plants shipped I'll get it figured out :P
