I have a spare 15g column tank that I'm not using. I'd like to get into keeping saltwater species, but I'd rather make a mistake on 15g than 150g. Never kept saltwater before. What are the first steps to starting one up? Tank is 15g tall with a 20g cheapo aqueon hangon filter. Any advice is appreciated.

that is going to be a cool sw tank! a 15 gallon is easier to make a mistake on than a 150 gallon.. anyway you need live rock, 1 pound of rock per gallon of water. for substrate you can do live sand or crushed coral. you need salt of course i use instant ocean sea salt for my salt tank and you need good filtration and maybe a protein skimmer filter. and most importantly you need to do lots of research and take your time with saltwater tanks

Go to 3reef.com or reefcentral.com. Read. A lot goes into sw.
