after much reading on MFK and some planning i built my first wet/dry, durso, and diy bulkhead this weekend. i also learned about back siphoning without power and what its like to clean up 20g of water out of carpet in a rush!:nilly:
everything works great and i cant believe how quiet the durso is compared to a standpipe. heres some picks:)

HI, NICE STUFF. I'M BUILDING OVERFLOWS THIS WEEKEND, YOU SAID DURSO WAS QUIETER THAN STANDPIPE. DO YOU MEAN THAT IF I PUT ELBOWS ON TOP ENDS OF MY STANDPIPES TO KEEP OPENING UNDER WATER, THEY WILL BE QUIETER. I'VE NO EXPERIENCE IN ANY.

ARE STRAIGHT OVERFLOW PIPES UP THROUGH THE BOTTOM, NOISY?

straight standpipes are extremely noisy, like a toilet flushing constantly. try this website, it will tell you how to build durso's http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ :)

thanks heaps, but are the pipes capped off completly at the very top? would a standpipe with 2 elbows[to make a U] and no overflow chamber work. I think so, but checking can safe fn around, thanks.

Everything looks pretty good. If it were me though, I wouldnt set the heaters on the plastic. Its probably fine the way you have it, but I would maybe set them on a layer of glass, and than set them on the plastic, just for peace of mind. Just my opinion, better safe than sorry. ;)

yeah i am thinking the same, just havent got a piece of glass yet. the suction cups hold em above the plastic though.

Thats pretty much exactly what i built for my 518, except my overflow is just a standpipe, but if you put some foam in the top it really isn't that noisy, and it adds a lil extra filtration
