 i need to know what i can put in my tank or how many i like oscars , tin foils ,red devils, salvini, pacu, severums , what would make a nice display? also i dont want to feed live food and :WHOA: i know feeder fish just cause probs. Thnks to any one who replies i value everyones in put

For starters, I keep many highly predatory fish...ie Crenicichla (pike cichlids) and Cichla (peacockbass), but i have them all on prepared foods like thawed cocktail shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, pellets (sinkin and floating) and various other things. I only RARELY feed them live foods, either to bulk them up (they grow much faster when fed live foods...its crazy) or as a extra treat/break from the regular feeding regime. When i feed my fish feeders though, they are all eaten within 3 minutes tops...so the risk of disease is greatly reduced cuz they aren't in the tank long enough. Quarantinin feeders though really reduces the risk of infection, and that is the main risk with feeders. Just so you know as well, there are TONS of live foods out there that are very nutritious for you fish and are a good idea occassionally. Earthworms, blackworms, moths, grasshoppers, crickets, ghost shrimp, tadpoles, crayfish, guppies and rosie reds. This is just scratchin the surface though. Point I was trying to get across though is you don't have to feed predatory fish live foods....they can be weaned onto prepared foods if you have the patience. I'm gonna start a new reply...lol...cuz this one is too long...oy...my bad...hehe.

I would try some dwarf pike cichlids......like Crenicichla compressiceps or Crenicichla regani. They stay small...4.5" being big for them...and they are FULL Of personality. Gettin dwarf pikes though will leave a whole bunch of possibilities open for you to set up a kickin community tank. If you do go with the pikes I mentioned above, your gonna wanna get at least a group of 3 of them....the more the better cuz pikes are kinda aggressive towards each other, kinda very aggressive. Gettin the larger number of pikes allows them to pair up naturally...then you can remove the other pikes that didn't pair up...and wala! You have a beautiful pair of pikes that will only bicker occassionally. Your gonna want some other dwarfs/smaller cichlids in there....so perhaps some aequidens or acara. Festivums are grrrrrrrrrrrreat cichlids, stay a managable size and just look awesome in any tank! I currently have one and hes one of my fav. cichlids...acts like hes royalty. Since you'll be puttin dwarfs in there, you will be able to do some tetras....but since pikes are predatory you gonna wanna chose them wisely. Diamond tetras, brokenline, serpae, black skirts and and of the other deeper bodied tetras will look great. Also the schoolin will help to break up the tank and give it more life.

If you still wanna stay with larger cichlids though ur gonna be limited to fewer fish, because of aggression and size. You could try some of the Thorichthys species like Fire Mouths. If you want a KEWL cichlid that stays relatively small, yet still gets large, and has great color and personalitiy, try Parachromis motaguense.....or Red Tiger Mota. The female are gorgeous, and the males are just as spectacular! There are soo many options for you out there though, and I know that someone else will give yaz their opinion....;) Best of luck! BTW...how far of a drive is it for you to go to Omaha, Nebraska? If its not that far we should meet up at one of the LFSs there....hehe. Chaio,
Jer

If you can get them, I love the look of the Red Tiger Motaguense...
