For starters, I keep many highly predatory fish...ie Crenicichla (pike cichlids) and Cichla (peacockbass), but i have them all on prepared foods like thawed cocktail shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, pellets (sinkin and floating) and various other things. I only RARELY feed them live foods, either to bulk them up (they grow much faster when fed live foods...its crazy) or as a extra treat/break from the regular feeding regime. When i feed my fish feeders though, they are all eaten within 3 minutes tops...so the risk of disease is greatly reduced cuz they aren't in the tank long enough. Quarantinin feeders though really reduces the risk of infection, and that is the main risk with feeders. Just so you know as well, there are TONS of live foods out there that are very nutritious for you fish and are a good idea occassionally. Earthworms, blackworms, moths, grasshoppers, crickets, ghost shrimp, tadpoles, crayfish, guppies and rosie reds. This is just scratchin the surface though. Point I was trying to get across though is you don't have to feed predatory fish live foods....they can be weaned onto prepared foods if you have the patience. I'm gonna start a new reply...lol...cuz this one is too long...oy...my bad...hehe.
