is it okay for fish to be in a baesment with no light available. I have been leaving a light on at night for them because I'm assuming they would not be able to see at all. Would it be bad for them to have no lights on?

Are there monsters in the basement? Just kidding. They would enjoy the light on a tank for about 10 hours a day and a background light the rest of the time as long as it is dim in the tank and not bright. N total darkness they might get spooked and cause damage to stuff or them selves.
I have my tanks in the basement and have the lights on for about 13 hours a day, the rest of the time there is complete darkness. I have never had any problem with my fish getting spooked and hurting themselves, not saying that cant happen. When the lights do come on, they are normally sleeping on the bottom and usually takes 10 minutes for them to slowly wake up and start swimming around in full activity.
My scat gets spooked when the lights are on. He always gets stuck in things and last time he got stuck he spooked the archer and the archer jumped out of the water and landed on the powerhead top. Silly scat.
