Is there any real difference between the amoxicillin/eurythromicin/penicillin etc that is available to buy for use in fish tanks and antibiotics used by vets or even human doctors to treat infection?

I ask because I came home from work to find my cat with a nasty owie on his tail that will be surely infected by monday when the vets office is open again.

I could and will take him to the weekend vet if I absolutely have to but then it is 100 bucks just to see the doctor and likely another 100 for them to clean his tail with iodine and send me home with a 4 dollar bottle of antibiotic, either amoxicillin or eurythromicin, all of which I have on hand even the idodine.

I know the dosage for both meds for him and his weight etc etc.

and of course Im not looking for medical advice, but rather if the antibiotics are the same minus binders and fillers to make into tablet form.

I have in the past used my extra antibiotics for my dog when she had a chronic ear infection, but at 120 lbs she takes human sized or larger doses of everything, and dogs are much more tolerant of medication than cats!!

Some of the capsules and tablets that are sold at fish stores are THE EXACT SAME THING they give you at the pharmacy. If I get Bronchitis, I buy meds at the lfs.

lol serious?! :D

From what I've seen, medications at the LFS are always marked up like crazy...

I'm not a fan of self-medicating pets, but that is probably because my dad is a vet. That said, I do so with my fish, but that is because there aren't exactly many people who are 'experts' in that field.

I got praziquantel from my dad... I forget the wholesale price he pays per pill, but it was incredibly cheaper than the watered-down stuff they sell at all the LFSs. Same with the antibiotics I got from him...

Thanks for the input!

I don't like to self medicate my pets either, but with my dog who has chronic health problems and the cats who seem to get into trouble more than most it starts to seem silly to pay for something like an after hours vet visit when I know exactly what they need.
he is on his third dose of amoxicillyn powder that I mix with a bit of milk and squirt into his mouth, and so far no weeping, swelling, heat or nastiness is coming from the wound, which is not at all typical for cat owies.!!
