Hi there,
I think about the following feature:
Some of my fish changed their colour to nearly black. And I wonder, if that might be a sign of senility.
The circumstances: The fish live in a 1.400 l - (369 US gal ?) - tank. There are loaches, different kinds of Anabantoidei (lung-fish), some corydoras and a group of Niger tetra. All the fish are older than 8 years, because I got them all in 2007 either adult from friends (where they have already lived 2-3 years) or I bought them adult from a market.
Usually, when ich search about colour-changing, the result is: the fish are sick.
But I do not think that they are ill. I observe them very carefully. They all behave in a very healthy manner and do not show any outward illness signs.
Only three of about 40 fish do show this sign of blackish colour:
- a 9 year old Trichogaster pectoralis (Snakeskin gourami),
- two 8+ year old Arnoldichthys spilopterus (Niger tetra).
As it is usually said, that fish turn their former sparkling colour into black, when they feel ill or uncomfortable, can it not be, that they show their senility this way?
It is just a theory. I can still not believe, that they "suffer" any comfort, cause all other fish are healthy and colourfull and the "seniors" would not have become so old, if they would not have felt well.
Does anybody have similar experiences? Or explanations?
