Are there any good fish for a community (guppies, platys, one betta) tank that has a sand substrate that would clean the sand? I had bought a rubber lipped catfish (i think thats the name, its like a small pleco that stays about 3", correct me if im wrong) when i had a rock substrate, and he is in the tank with the sand now.

Nothing will 'clean' the sand by eating detritus or waste material. However, there are fish that will stir the sand to help the filter in removing waste. For a small fish community, try horseface loaches.

I had a dojo loach (might be the same one oddball mentioned) that would dig around under the sand all the time. I don't think he was eating annything but he was stirring it up.

A big fat geophagus would sift your sand, but I think this is your 20 gal. If it is, no go on the geo.

What about those snails that burrow under the substrate? I can't remember what they are called.

Malaysian trumpet snails. Awesome sifters and they're livebearing which means they have an added bonus of not leaving ugly egg masses everywhere.

Horseface's and Dojo/Weather loaches are different but both wil dig in the sand. Trumpet snails will also help. I have used Fiddler crabs in my tank before but they got eaten.

You could always go with a group of ghost shrimp they are always pretty cheep, easily accessible and fun to watch. Or maybe a few cory's to clean up extra food here and there.

Dan is right, they would be a lot more helpful over at AquariaCentral, but I would just get some invertebrates to mess with the sand.
