so recently i have developed a little fish crush on several lake tang and i have an empty 75 gal. my problem is i know almost absolutely nothing on how to keep africans. the fish i have my eyes on are calvus, shellies, and cyprichromis leptosoma.. what would be a good stock list?.. if it can even work.. im planning for sand substrate and aside from that rocks for the calvus.. is that good or are there certain specifics that im missing?

You can stock those in a 75 for sure, I would do 12 cyps ( not the jumbo variety), 6-8 calvus or compressiceps, and 6 shellies ( 1 species) keep in mind you may or may not have to remove extra males from any of these groups if things get too aggresive.

That's a perfect stock list for a 75. Keep it simple. One species for each "habitat" - 1 rock dweller, 1 shell dweller and 1 open water dweller.

now how should i do the rock work? would a big pile of round river stones work or would like a wall of shale work better?

In a 75, you'd be looking to get maybe 3 pairs/trios of rock dwelling fish. For my 75, I have 8 goldhead comps and have set up three areas. Try to spread them out a bit to provide solid delineation between territories. Shells should be done the same way... at least two piles, typically situated towards the front of the tank.

awesome! thanks!!
