Hi my name is Al, and I'm a fishaholic...

I worked late yesterday and it was dark when I got home. I clicked my room lights on and of course my babies were sleeping. I was gonna click their light on and wake them up for feeding, but ended up sitting on a stool watching them sleep. I noticed every once in a while they twitch, it this a dream they are having? Also I noticed not all of them remain completely still, my O and Firemouth for instance were swimming very slowly across the bottom, is this sleep swimming? I really dont think my O was awake because i perfectly timed the dropping of a shrimp pellet and it fell right in front of its face (he will eat anything and is always hungry).

Also when a fish stretches out their mouth, is that equivalent to them yawning?

i dont know the exact biology or whatever -ology of fish sleep. but fish are semi-conscious when they "sleep" . cuz even in the wild, they'll have to stay in one place to sleep right? or else they'll be drifted to the end of the river every night o.O and i think they know you are there when they are sleeping cuz i notice my dats try to slowly drift away from me cuz they can see me in the dark .

From what i've seen no one has really physically explained the yawning thing...

Since when we yawn its to get more oxygen, it would make sense that your fish was doing it to the same effect if his gills are extended...I've seen many different fish do it its not just a cichlid thing.

As for sleeping I know some fish do weird things while asleep, like "head stand"
