I have a new 40 gallon breeder tank. It has been up and running for about 4 months now and all chemicals readings are good. I have a Power Whisper 30 filter (30 gallon) and a Penguin 200 filter (50 gallon) and a Maxi-jet 600 powerhead (160 GPH) in the tank, there was also some driftwood in the tank that I have recently taken out. The tank temp is around 78 degrees F. I've tried 2 or 3 times in the past 6 weeks to add fish to the tank, usually tropical fish, but everytime I add them within hours their fins and tails turn white and they die. I've tried everything I can think of to help the situation from water changes to Ick and some other disease cures. Any help would be greatly appreciated, the plants look good but I would like some fish.

Is there anything else alive in your tank besides the plants?

If not, my first thoughts are there is some type of contamination in your tank killing the fish. Chemical contamination of some sort is really the only explanation that I can think of that would kill fish in such a short amount of time, given your statement that your temp and other parameters are in check.

What's your pH? Platys prefer neutral to alkaline conditions. Since these fish are usually farm-produced in high alkaline conditions, your platy problems may be caused by pH shock.

Do the fish exhibit spiralling syndrome before they die? If so, this is usually caused by aerosol sprays (bug spray, room air fresheners, oven cleaner spray (on warm ovens)).
