So my tank is currently broken. Waiting on repairs, I had the vast majority of my fish stored in two trash cans. with a XP4 on each. I thought since they were going to be on extended stay while the tank is being repaired it would be much better to move them to a rubber maid trough. Moved the fish to this about four days ago. same two XP4's. In the last two days I have lost three fish. Tested all my levels yesterday after the first two died. Ammonia and nitrate were 0 or damn near. Nitrite on the other hand was high. Did a 30%ish water change. Woke up this morning to another body.
Any suggestions? Do you think I should pull all the rocks out? maybe they are releasing something that was on them.(they were new from the landscape man, but were scrubbed before entering the tank.)

He looks surprised, being dead in the picture must have caught him off guard.

its always wirth taking them out just in case,
is the temp good? are any gasping for breath? i no that sounds stupid but worth asking

you cant go wrong with removing the rocks bro. if you think thats the problem.

How big is there tank? How big were the trash cans? If both previous containers are bigger than the rubbermaid trough you may need to up wc and maintenance.

Pulling the rocks out. Fish seem actually very happy, other than they are cichlids so someone is always fighting. No erratic breathing. Temp is right at 80f. Got air from bubbler and water movement with the two XP4's and a power head.

There tank was a 180. The trash cans were 32 gallons each(probably only had about 25 gals. in each really) the trough is 100 gals probably about 90 really. But only 2/3's of the fish are in the tub. The others are in smaller tanks I have had laying around. only about 35 fish actually in the tub. 10 of which are clown loaches and two very small cats.(2")
