i have a 29 Gal fresh water tank
Ph 7.5
Ammon Below .25
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 20 ppm
Temp 78
Marineland power 200
bubble stick and bubble disk
Tank has been up and running since early Sept.
started out with 3 Tetras tank levels spiked and lowered then i added a Royal Pleco let him adjust then added
a small Rainbow shark he settled then added two small Electric Blue Acara with the idea removing the tetras.
all good for a week then the tetras started dying off, then noticed the Rainbow chasing my smaller Acara relentlessly to the point it just stayed in hiding. so i sold the rainbow back to the LPS. with the tank only with
pleco and 2 small Acara i decided to get a couple of platys. a day later my smaller Acara died and next day
platys were dead. only thing left is my bigger Acara and my royal pleco and they seem fine.
i do water changes and treat with prime. Im OUT OF IDEAS!!!!

tanks too small and plecos can be aggressive as well. My assumption is either water params are spiking or your pleco is going HAM on the fish at night.
well thats when a see all the damage is in the morning. i had a Pleco and 2 Red headed Chiclids in a 29 for 2 years never had a problem till red heads got to big

I doubt it's the Pleco or the Rainbow shark, but I will bet $$$ the ammonia is doing it for you. Plecos are know to be aggressive, but not until they get larger and I have a Rainbow and a Black that doesn't bother anything and they are in with many fish smaller than them and less aggressive. Platys can tolerate ZERO AMMONIIA, just like Mollies from what I am to understand while some hardier fish may be tolerant of it. I suggest some ammo-chips for now and frequent water changes until you can get a better colony of Natural bacteria.

Do you work on cars or work w/ oils and greases or other chemicals on your hands? many of these as well as certain soaps take several washes to get out of your skin/pores and can pollute the water if not entirely removed, Comet/AJAX are notorious for this. What did you use to start and cycle your tank and how often do you add Beneficial Bacteria "Assist" ?
How often do you rinse filter cartridges, and what type of filtration do you use?
How often do you do water changes and gravel vacuum?
When you introduce new fish, tell me in detail what is your method of introducing them - from the time you float them until you put them in the tank?
Have you noticed anything peculiar at all since setting up the tank?
What area do you live ad what type of water do you use? (I.E. tap water, R/O, Spring, Distilled water, etc)
