It can if it is a naturally social fish. I would imagine a pike or something similar to be content with being solitary.

For instance, african glass catfish die after a month of isolation. Most fish that tolerate tankmates would probably be happier with some. But something evil that kills all it's tankmates will most likely be happier alone. Either that or it just gets a kick out of killing other fish...
 
my one JD hasn't eaten in weeks and stays on one place all the time now. she normal plays/chases the tank mates.
