There has been alot of talk about fish farming here in Cloverdale CA. Unfortunately tilipia are illegal in every county with the acception of the six most northern. Now it looks like a showdown between catfish or carp. Is anybody terribly offended by the idea of eating a koi? There is a really cool study going on in Davis where they are treating MERSA infections with the slime coat of koi and frogs. I guess when all the antibiotics fail we reach for the slime. Makes perfect sense. So which fish to try first? Koi seem an obvious choice for me since they are already domesticated. We could put a bunch of different carp into one spot and let them interbreed and naturalize to the environment. But then we could loose nutritional and medicinal properties by letting them breed willy nilly. I used to think fish farming was so much simpler.

I know nothing about the flavor of koi flesh but I imagine it is probably similar to carp which is not very popular or well liked by very many people around here.

There is actually species of tilapia that are not restricted in your area, finding them maybe difficult. Its mainly, the main aquaculture species that are banned but others suitable species exist(some of the nonrstricted Oreochromis would work nicely) . I believe its a few counties in Southern Cal(San Bernadino, etc.), where their species are already naturalized; that their production isn't restricted.

If tilapia can't be sourced try channel catfish or sunfish. I personally do raise tilapia and koi(separately) in aquaponics reservoirs but the thought of eating a koi, doesn't sound appealing(because of flavors)
