I've been searching for severums and rainbows at lfs. I have not seen much that catches the eye. I was considering online stores but have never tried this method of getting fish before. I admit I'm skeptical about it. I don't want any harm the fish. Has anyone had any experience with ordering online before and how did it go?

I know how you feel I was skeptical at first too. It is really all about who you get it from. For the severums I would look at "Tangled Up In Cichlids" I have heard from multiple different people that they are amazing and take amazing care to make sure fish get to you alive and well. I personally haven't ordered from them but I ordered a starry night cichlid and a frontosa from bluegrass aquatics both being babies I wasn't sure they would survive also seeing that it was mid winter but they came within 2 days with the heat packs still warm. I hope this helps if you have anymore questions just ask. :)

I get all of my fish online and It normally goes very smooth as long as you are buying from a good seller.
The places I normally order my fish from are
and Wes of Rare Fish
I have nothing but good things to say about these places/people

I agree as well that Imperial Tropicals is a good choice. They have a wide variety of Severums so you could pick the best species. I ordered a Red-Spotted Severum and a few other fish from them recently and it came in good condition. Little sponges were provided as well as many heat packs. The Severum is a personable little fish and is already showing some good coloration of red, and some white marking on his face since he's a male. Imperial had great customer service with how quick it came, answering back emails fast, and giving me text updates of what was going on. I do feel the Severum was just a tad bit pricey but it was worth it.
Here's their website: https://imperialtropicals.com/ .

I have ordered on line, and had fish shipped many times, and never had a problem with many of the known vendors mentioned above.

There "are" a few do's and don'ts that the person being shipped to, should be aware of, that will help in the healthy arrival of fish.

I use either airport to airport, (if that is available) or 24 hour guarantied only.

For larger fish, airport to airport seems best, meaning the shipper gets the fish out that same day, and the receiver goes to his or her local airport to pick the fish up a few hours later.
In that way the fish spend as little time in a box as possible, to reduce stress and possibility of fouling the bags.

For smaller fish, 24 hour works well.
But if there is an ETA of 10 AM, it means the receiver should be there at that time to receive them, and get them in a tank quickly.
If they end up sitting on a hot, or cold porch for a few hours because you can't be there for some reason, that lessens the likelihood of a successful outcome.

I usually take the day off work to receive them, or if I couldn't, had them shipped directly to my work, and did a water change on the bags there, immediately after arrival, especially if there were a number of hours left before I could get them in tank.

Or if the shipper used the USPS, instead of having the fish ride around in a hot or cold truck for a few hours, I would call my local post office, ask them to hold the box there, because I would show up at opening time to get the package myself.

One other perk of using the USPS, is if they don't arrive at the stated and guaranteed time, shipping cost would be returned, other shipper companies may not provide this service.

Tangled up in cichlids and Imperial Tropicals are both great places to order from. Be careful ordering in winter though. Shipping through very cold areas can increase risk if there are any delays in shipping.

Ordering online is easy and just like going to the LFS it depends on the source, then add the wild card of shippers and weather. A good shipper will get you over those hurdles. All the ones listed are good sources. However, a good LFS can get in whatever you want if you talk to the manager. If they are ordering from Nautilus, 5D, Segrest, or Sunpet all they have to do is ask their rep for the fish. These guys look at lists of over a thousand fish each week and order what they think their customers will buy. Store owners tend to like guaranteed sales. This avoids you taking the risk and ordering yourself. It really depends on what you are willing or able to do.

Thanks very much for the advice on ordering online. I just about was to pull out the plastic when I had a feeling to return to my lfs. I did find my rainbow cichlid and also not the rotkeil severum but two synspilum cichlids. There small, not yet coloring yet. So I think I have a full house with this tank.
