I am curious? my fish's always tend to Flick againts rocks, gravel driftwood,,and I dont know why?? everthing is normal and I do weekly water changes?? amonia 0, Nitirte 0 Nitrate at 40..But I have soft water Ph at 6.2..its always been like that....do you think its the PH??..they eat good swim good except the darn flickering...:nilly:

My african cichlids do the same thing, like they are itching the sides of their body's. They look fine and have done this for quite some time. Dunno what it is. If you find out let me know too. Bump for ya

Fish do this for lots of reasons. It could be harmless, like them trying to scratch old scales off. Or it could be something more. Could be a parasite, my guess is flukes. If you cant see any worms/parasites visibly, or any other indictation its a parasite, then its either skin/gill flukes or scratching old scales off.

From what I understand, scratching is as common as when a fish yawns. The problem is knowing whether its normal or the fish has something. I see some of my fish do it sometimes. But I am about to treat my tank for flukes just in case.

I would consider it quite normal. All fish do this. If it is extremely excessive flashing, or you notice parasites or any bacteria... then you may have to treat. My fish do this all the time, but, i can tell the difference because I have one that has had bacteria problems for a while and does it constantly. Funny thing is...this bacteria doesn't spread to the other fish. Only this one fish seems to have a problem with it.

yea..I mean I dont see anything on them or comming out of them..Like I said they eat normal..very active..My Parrot dont do it..nor the Geo..just the bass's, datnoids..and my Texas???oh well....things to look for...

Normal thing. I wouldn't sweat it cause your parameters look good.

Unless this habit becomes frequent, there is no reason to worry about.

yea..at one point I was paranoid..I was doing 10% waterchanges everyday!!!

I guess im more OCD , I did 2 50% water changes in two days and then treated with quick cure for 9 days total. With 50% water changes every three days. The fish doesn't flicker on the rocks any more though :) Him and his friend the poly sen are doing great.

cool.....you know I was wondering.,I wonder besides the Nitite, nitrate, amonia and PH kits we check on, If there other elements thats we over look that fish's need..Just something to ponder...I mean im noooooo marine, fresh water biologist..
