Got some large smelt from a bait dealer. As luck would have it, 5 out of the 6 were females bearing eggs. The smelt eggs are a great treat and bulking food for the loaches, eels, and small fish. The meat was carved into chunks for the Cichlids and Peacock Bass. It takes a little work, but it pays dividends.

Nice work wurm! Is it common to get smelt laden with eggs?

How much does smelt go for? Also, wouldnt the fish feasting upon eggs need to have a steady, constant supply of the eggs as a bulking food rather then a one off feeding?

It is, if you ask for the largest ones. The females are usually larger than the males, at least in my experience.

I think I paid $3.00 for a pound. This was not for one feeding, the amount of eggs I collected will give me enough to feed the loaches once a week for months.

Do you keep them in the frig or freezer?
