FISH FOR POND

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No, the problem is that it gets down to the mid-40F range. That's the number that determines how much heater capacity you need; a thermostatically-controlled heater automatically turns off when temps rise above the set point, and then turns back on when they drop below.

Of course your fish become gradually more active as temperatures gradually grow warmer. That's actually not a good thing; a fish that barely eats because it is experiencing a temperature that is near the bottom of its acceptable range will have its metabolism slow back down if temperatures drop again...as they certainly will at some point as the winter progresses. So it stops eating again and its minimal metabolism will not digest the food in its stomach, which will simply decay. Dead fish.

I just saw your latest post, with a grocery list of warmwater fish you are considering, so I will bow out now. Good luck.

Edited: Now I just saw your newest post; you can't be serious. That is a handheld heater designed for kitchen use, to boil water for tea!
i am not in europe otherwise i would have bought a 4000 watt automatic heater. Here they aren't available.
BTW the other fish have managed to pull through one month of harsh winter

so that won't work?

It'll probably work if you want to make tea.

Congrats!

When fish "manage to pull through", I feel that I have achieved my goal with respect to my aquarium...

By the way...you do realize that winter hasn't even officially begun yet? Another week of fall before winter hits.

Yeah I think John is right in saying to fix your temperature issue in the pond before purchasing of new fish. Winter will come again year after year, and you will keep experiencing the same issue of a dead rtc even if you grow it out one year unless you manage to warm the pond. Your fish surviving one year of winter (which hasn’t arrived yet) does not indicate it would survive the following year of harsh cold.

If you’re keeping tropical fish in an outdoor pond you’re gunna need a heater, unless you’re lucky enough to live in a tropical climate. It sounds like you’ve been having issues with winter temperatures, so I’m guessing that’s not the case. Even if temps seem fine in winter now, all it takes is one extremely cold day to mess up everything if you don’t have a heater.

I’d suggest looking into cold water fish. There are some cool cold water catfish and other cold water fish that would be awesome in your setup.

yeah i know you are right, but i will still keep tropical fish. i asked the shopkeeper to hook me up with some bad boy heaters and he said i would have to wait. Now that out of the way, i an thinking about doing a very dangerous mix.
i am thinking of growing out a baby jaguar cichlid, hornet cichlid and red devil cichlid together and then add them to the pond. Will it work?

No. Just no to that setup you mentioned. I would only choose one of those (personally, I would go for the red devil).

Since you clearly don’t care about the long term health of the fish, does it really matter what we suggest?
None of the fish you mentioned will survive past winter, even heated you are driving up electric costs and it may not be sufficient unless the pond is really well insulated. Beyond that, most of those fish would be lucky to make it to winter without one of their tankmates killing them first.
