fish friendly plants that can have fully submerged roots?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea the planter is tan, it will be black in a few hours. I actually just hooked up my power head. Its over 800 GPH I know that, it used to be in my 125 Salt tank.

Yea the planter is fully submerged but im looking to have the leaves and branches out of water t make the dead air space above my tank a little more appealing to the eye.

i meant the pvc pipes look white in the second pic, but it think its just the lighting. its schedule grey 80 no?

Working on the same thing. Will probably go with good ol pothos. My tank is right next to a window, I've thought about water hyacinth cause I'd love to have something that sprouts flowers. I wish I knew what does a better job of sucking out nitrates.

There are at least four types of java fern. All can be grown easily submersed.
For an african tank, there are also a large number of Anubias plants that are good for low light and in my experience, fish dont mess with them.
If you have a good water current, Bolbitis heudelotii can be a good choice as well. I have had some issues with it in my tank, largely because I don't think i have enough current, or I have too much light.

So Java fern can grow in tank water? Does it need soil? I've looked for Pothos and can't find it in my area. I can get Java fern but Do I clean the roots off and hang it in the tank like Pothos or some other way? Sorry for the hijacking.

I like to place small tanks in window, and run a line from the sump to the tank, and drill them so they overflow either back into the main tank, or to the sump.

Beside marginals like Papyrus and pothos, I put small shrimp like rhishi, gammarus or live bearers in the planted refugiums, that occasionally wash over into main tanks and become food food.

These small shrimp also do a great job of eating the detritus the can build up in refugiums, and processing it, making the byproducts more easily available for beneficial bacteria in filters and that live on plant roots.

There are tons of plants that are suitable to be fully submerged... I know a lot of them and have used them. With the pics you can see 0 rooting spots. I do have good current.

I am looking for a plant that IS NOT fully submerged... Only the roots, it seems im waiting 2 weeks for local HD to get them in.....

Also Krylon Fusion is MIA so orderd a can online.... lol

Java fern.

Java Fern doesn't work they way the OP is asking. It can grow out of water, but it requires a very high humidity level to survive and it simply doesn't grow fast enough to take excess nutrients out of the water in the way the OP wants.

The best plants for growing with submerged roots in that manner are Syngonium and Pothos. Neither requires much light and they both grow like crazy. AS a bonus, both can be found easily at any big box home improvement store or Wal-Mart.
