I have a common pleco about 12 inches who has all of a sudden developed a white sore with what looks like a red ring around it. Almost if a bit got taken out of him however i have nothing big enough to bite him. I have some drift wood in the tank but nothing sharp and a small java fern.

any idea what it is i included a ok pic

im doing a water change right now in hopes it will clear up and there is some algea on the side that makes the water look cloudy right now. sorry

maybe it freaked out and got scratched from the driftwood you have...red ring kind of makes me think it may be infected already? how deep is the sore?

try and measure the size of it periodically, to see if the condition is getting worse or not.

Watch it carefully, like goestonemona said it could turn into a bacterial infection. I would add melafix and primafix combined together. Im glad you are keeping the water clean now, that's what he needs.

well not just now i do 25-50% every week. It varies dependent upon how full my overflow is. but normally i just change the water when the overflow gets to the bottom and needs refilling. Figure i can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

wow i didnt even think of that he was over by the heater the other day. I forgot to mention i did have some feeder fish in there but they all seemed healthy when i bought them. Also i introduced a couple new fish right before i found the sore and they are acting and appear fine.

keeping an eye on water parameters and praying. So far it looks the same or better hasnt gotten any bigger. Trying to keep the lights on more in hopes hell stay dormant longer giving him more time to heal. Plus my moss balls and new aratus are loving it :)
