so probably not herpes but seems viral in nature.

So my triple red cockatoo dwarf cichlid has been getting these black lumps at both sides of his mouth, just below where the upper jaw and low jaw meet, the hinge. They start to grow and get bigger, in a teardrop manner. Then eventually seem to fall off and after another few weeks they start to grow back.

Anyone know what this could be?

Pictures?

ah sorry guys, been busy and right after I posted this they were gone the next day. I will post some when they grow back in a few weeks.

ok update. Check it out, first two pics you can see the black growth on his lower left jaw. Third pic was taken just a day or two after and its gone. It has been growing then coming off, then growing back for a few months.

that thing is very strange :-I

I know right? sounds like a viral cycle with the virus using the cells to reproduce then rupturing and letting new virus out. However, there is no wound or damage. The black cyst just grows, then disappears, grows back then disappears. On a side note, his orange colors are looking sick in that last pic lol.

in pic, it seems to stick out like like a cork. does it, or is that a distortion?

no it does, it kind off looks like a water droplet about to fall down off a surface it is hanging from, or like you said a cork. In other words it does protrude out from the jaw about 1mm.

... wonder if there's any such thing as a mini leach?
I would net him next time it's there and see if it can be knocked off.
