From what i've gathered, you have to suck air out from the highest point while someone adds water to the tanks to keep the seal from breaking. Another way would be to fill it from it's highest point. Never actually seen or experimented with one of them, though.

On another note, that avatar is awesome. "I got a fever! And the only prescription is more cowbell!"

Would you be able to post up an example of one? I've never heard of this and it sounds pretty interesting...

And thanks for the comment on the avatar, its got no bacon, but i like it

Ive always thought one of those would be cool for a huge moray.

^ my thoughts exactly... cool idea, but when something goes wrong with the tunnel or suction, i can see a whole host of other problems arising from the situation... but i guess if you can pull it off, and don't have any flooring that can be damaged by water etc, then it could be something worth considering if your into that kinda thing...

Filling from the top would NOT work unless you have a way to dam up both ends (think about how a siphon works). The way to fill a big siphon like this is suck air out. Smaller ones could be completly submerged (inverted) to fill, then cover ends, then pull out and turn as it should go, then drop into tank, then uncover ends. Seems like a lot more work than just sucking out the air!
