So how do you fill one of these? I was reading about them in another thread, and I understand how they work, but i don't understand how you fill it to enable the suction to hold the water in...

Filling from the top would NOT work unless you have a way to dam up both ends (think about how a siphon works). The way to fill a big siphon like this is suck air out. Smaller ones could be completly submerged (inverted) to fill, then cover ends, then pull out and turn as it should go, then drop into tank, then uncover ends. Seems like a lot more work than just sucking out the air!
