Fish holding sperm?

I had a guppy a pair of guppies that spawned, and shortly after the male was removed because of his aggressive behavior towards the female. The female finally had her babies, but weeks later, had more babies. I was told the female was holding sperm. Why do fish do this, and for how long is it possible to do so? Also, is it possible she will have more?

Guppy's can hold sperm enough for 3 sets of baby's.
(or so I've heard)

They can hold the sperm for a few months at least.
