impossible to tell. anybody that tells you anything else is misinformed. But being the true trimacs are fairly rare in the hobby now. you can bet your bottom dollar if you didn't buy it from a specialty importer or breeder that you have a very low grade flowerhorn. the visual distinction is impossible to tell many times between true trimacs and FH's. trimacs do grow more than 3 spots, and they ussally fade as the fish matures.

ya looks like a trimac or a low grade FH.

:iagree: sometimes it is easy to tell that the fish is a Fh and not a trimac, but to tell if a fish is a trimac and not a low-grade Fh is next to impossible without dna testing.

a hybred mix b/w a trimax and a FH

A Fh is a hybrid of a trimac and other species...a trimac hybrid with a fh is still a fh...just adding more trimac blood than was there to start with. :)

let's wait until the OP gives some input as to where he got the fish from, then it would be much easier to have an idea, for the reasons XR gave earlier

Hey! Sorry guys for the really late reply.... was stuck in a place without the internet!
Thanks everybody for the inputs.... now I know it's almost impossible to tell without a DNA test!!
I'm from Delhi, India and I got the fish from a nearby LFS, which is in no way a reputable source of pure bred fish. Infact, I'm pretty sure they don't even know what a Trimac cichlid is?!!
I guess, I'll keep it as a low grade flowerhorn. But whatever it is.... this guy is super aggressive at 10+ inches..... right now in a 6 feet tank on its own! any ideas on how to introduce a tank mate.... was thinking of putting my 8 inch texas male with the FH... will it be a hara-kiri of sorts???!!
