If at all possible get a side shot with her fins flared out. It is defiantely a Peacock female. But there is very little differences in the females.

Honestly trying to I.d. a female african is almost imppssible. They are all plain and look the same. It just looks like a female peacock. That is my .02

Many (not all, but many) female/non-colored-up Protomelas can be identified between species because of the differences in melanin patterns. There are also other obvious species where you can tell them apart (Nimbochromis and other predators, C. moori, Exochromis).

On peacocks, a few have distinguishing characteristics (red jakes, crested dwarfs, Ngara stuartgranti), but most appear like the picture you posted. I have even seen great variation within a collection point (light and dark-colored Bengas for example).

That is why I never recommend keeping female peacocks in mixed tanks.

You can figure out what a female is, You have to consider patterns both on fins and body, Colors showing and lateral lines all tell you what species they are. I have to agree you probably are right about the Lemon Jake. I could tell it was not a few and that was not one I had ruled out. Besides if there was absolutely no way to tell one species from another in females then how can any chiclid owner know if they have the right one? Because someone told us?
